Relational Care Therapy, Slater Lin PLLC

K. Slater Lin, EdM, LMHC, NCC (they/them)
Hello and welcome! My name is Slater, and I am a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and graduated from Seattle University in 2019. I am passionate in working alongside individuals from an intersectional approach that brings the awareness of oppressive structures and how they have pathologized people (ableism, classism, capitalism, racism, etc.). How do these structures impact you? How have they led you to internalize negative narratives about yourself? What areas of pain and "otherness" do you hold within yourself? Through my own work, experiences, and identities, I hope to provide a space that holds a balance of loving empathy, vulnerability, and directness to create a healing environment for you. Along with supporting clients, I am also a WA state approved supervisor, and provide licensing supervision as well as consultation.

Before attending Seattle University, I spent several years working with older adults in supportive housing and case management. I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, with a major in Psychology in 2014. Prior to starting a private practice, I was a clinician and assistant director at Whole Valley Therapy which focused on supporting individuals and families within the LGBTQIA2S+ communities. Before that, I worked for Sound Mental Health supporting adult clients with developmental and intellectual disabilities with co-occurring disorders. I have focused my clinical work on helping individuals navigate various aspects and intersections of identity including ethnicity, ability, age, gender and sexuality

I am a biracial individual, being half Taiwanese and half white, as well as identify as an agender, queer, chronically ill, neurodivergent individual. I have lived in Washington state my whole life, and enjoy hiking, playing videogames, listening to political rock/metal, spending time with my 2 dogs and cat, and always love a good potluck containing delicious food, games, and community! My special interests are always changing (yay neurodivergence!) and greatly appreciate learning new things from others. I enjoy bringing humor/playfulness, love, compassion, and energy into all spaces of my life.

My Therapeutic Approach:

I am strongly rooted in a relational approach, where the relationship within the therapeutic setting is a core focus in the support I provide. I am passionate in supporting folx who are seeking to understand their deep pain, and find liberation within the self, while also building better connections/relationships with the people around them; to help people have an understanding of the systems of oppression that have impacted who they believe they are, and how to de-pathologize the self. For supervision/consultation, though I offer modalities/resources/suggestions on things that come up, my priority is to help support you in leaning into your intuition as a therapist, and harness what it means for you to hold this identity and be in this role. The goal is to support you in rehumanizing yourself, to help in guiding others to rehumanize themselves from a decolonized lens.

The fundamentals of how I approach therapy derive from a relational, social justice, multicultural, feminist, and anti-oppression lens. I also utilize and have had experience while working at Whole Valley Therapy of learning more about Functional Analytical Psychotherapy (FAP). Though I do incorporate other evidence-based modalities (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-CBT, Family Systems Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy-IFS, Dialectical Behavior Therapy-DBT, EMDR, etc.), I am constantly questioning/holding healthy skepticism of where these modalities derive from, and how they impact certain individuals based on their identities. The western world has heavily influenced psychotherapy, which means that certain roots of therapy will not always resonate with folx who hold historically oppressed identities; I feel it is important to hold awareness of these roots in the modern therapeutic space to advocate that there is not a "right" way to be human. Whether you are experiencing depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relational trauma/complex trauma, holding curiosity for your intersecting identities related to race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, etc. and wanting to explore identities of oppression and privilege, I am here to hold loving space to understand these aspects with you.
This is a short film I saw at the Asian American film Festival in Seattle in 2018, "Tough" by Jennifer Zheng. Jen (she/her) lovingly gave permission for me to share her vulnerable, raw, and artistic piece in this online space that resonates with myself, and many people I have and have had the privilege to work alongside with.
